How writing changed one woman’s life

For over 12 years Yolanda Jackson found herself being shipped from one foster home to another. During this time she wrote to help her deal with her life. She got out of foster care at age 17 and became a medical transcriptionist and now writes for a living.

Yolanda during the interview talks about how at age 17 she was let out of the foster care system and literally walked out of the court house with no where to go. How she struggle for many years working 3 jobs just to make it and having never really been alone felt she needed to keep busy hence so many jobs at once, she was afraid to be alone in her first apartment.

From high school Yolanda always had the dream to become a writer, she didn’t have parents who supported her dreams and many times neither did her teachers. But that didn’t stop Yolanda from reaching for her dreams!

Writing eased her pain of moving from one foster home to another or one group home to another. Everytime she moved she tried to write a novel to help her cope with her new hom, and because of this she became more involved in writing and she began to image places that only exist in fantasy or animals that only inhibit one’s imagination.

She published her first book “Peter Carrot-Top In Search of the 8th Key” in December of 2008 and her goal is to keep writing for children of the world to show them that they can do anything they can put their mind to and to keep using their imagaination to dream and to dream big.

NOTE FROM ADMIN: After interviewing Yolanda it is my honest opinion that Yolanda may be the next J.K Rowling. Yolanda is very passionate about her work, and for someone to have gone through what she went through and still follow her dreams there is no stopping this lady! Yolanda is a wonderful woman and I wish her all the luck and success to her!

You can purchase Yolanda’s book “Peter Carrot-Top In Search of the 8th Key” through Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com or any other online bookstore.

How Lupus Saved My Life

Diane Tegarden wasn’t a full time writer until she was stricken down with lupus and had to close her company and stop working full time. What could have been a crippling end to a productive life was at first a blow Diane didn’t think she’d overcome. Then, after struggling several years with lupus, she found that an organic diet and lifestyle helped to partially restore her energy level and health, so that she could start to think about working again.

That’s when Diane decided to do what she’d always wanted to do. At first, she felt she couldn’t justify letting someone else support her while she launched her new career at the ripe young age of 48!! Then Diane just allowed it to happen, and it’s wonderful beyond words.

Join us for a touching hour of Talk Radio!

Rebbekah will share her daily struggles with Lupus as well, while she doesn’t talk very often about her struggle with Lupus on today’s show she will discuss the many aspects of dealing with an auto immune disease.

“Lupus is a hard disease to diagnose, through so many tests coming back with either a yes or no so many times the doctors finally said this is what you have, although we are not sure.  The only thing I have come to rely on is how I feel day to day.  There are many days I need to lay down for a couple naps to get my energy back.  I have begun to take better care of myself, by starting to eat more organic foods, listening to my body when I need rest and basically scheduling my day around how I feel.

Many of my clients are not aware that I am “ill” and to me that is a good thing.  I am a strong woman and while I have many daily ups and downs what keeps me going is my family, my friends and my clients. So while I do discuss having LUPUS on HYTR, please do not change your opinion of me or how I am able to handle clients etc ….I have learned that if there is a will there is a way.  Hence why some days you will see me online late at night those were the days I needed to lay down in the afternoons.  Being able to run a business from home has been a blessing.  I am better able to schedule my hours around my body, rest and still give 100% to my clients and my radio show.” -Rebbekah White

What is Lupus?

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body’s natural defense system (immune system) attacks its own tissues instead of attacking foreign substances like bacteria and viruses. This causes inflammation. Inflammation causes swelling, pain, and tissue damage throughout the body. If you develop severe lupus, you may have problems with your kidneys, heart, lungs, nervous system, or blood cells. Lupus is the common name for systemic lupus erythematosus, also called SLE.

Although some people with lupus have only mild symptoms, the disease is lifelong and can become severe. But most people can control their symptoms and prevent severe damage to their organs. They do this by seeing their doctors often for checkups, getting enough rest and exercise, and taking medicines.

This topic focuses on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the most common and most serious type of lupus. But there are four other types of lupus: discoid or cutaneous lupus, drug-induced systemic lupus, neonatal lupus, and subacute cutaneous lupus.

What causes lupus?

The exact cause of lupus is not known. Experts believe that some people are born with certain genes that affect how the immune system works and that they are more likely to get lupus. Then a number of other factors can trigger lupus attacks. These include viral infections, including the virus that causes mononucleosis, and sunlight.

Although these things can trigger lupus, they may affect one person but not another person.

What are the symptoms?

Lupus symptoms vary widely, and they come and go. The times when symptoms get worse are called relapses, or flares. The times when symptoms are not so bad are called remissions.

Common symptoms include feeling very tired and having joint pain or swelling (arthritis), a fever, and a skin rash Click here to see an illustration.. The rash often happens after you have been in the sun. Mouth sores and hair loss may occur. Over time, some people with lupus have problems with the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood cells, or nervous system.

How is lupus diagnosed?

There is no single test for lupus. Because lupus affects different people in different ways, it can be hard to diagnose.

Your doctor will check for lupus by asking you questions, looking for common symptoms, and doing some blood tests. It is easier for your doctor to diagnose lupus if you have the most common symptoms and your blood has certain proteins. These proteins are called antinuclear antibodies, or ANAs. But other problems can cause your body to make ANAs, so doctors will use blood tests and other tests to find out if you have lupus.

How is it treated?

Lupus is treated by:

  • Applying corticosteroid cream for rashes.
  • Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for mild joint or muscle pain and fever.
  • Taking antimalarial medicines to treat fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and lung inflammation.
  • Taking low-dose corticosteroids if other medicines are not controlling your symptoms.

Because corticosteroids are powerful medicines and can cause serious side effects, the doctor will recommend the lowest dose that will give the most benefit.

The doctor may also recommend other medicines that slow down the immune system.

How can you manage lupus?

One of the goals of controlling mild to moderate lupus symptoms is to prevent flares, the times when your symptoms are worse. Some of the other things you can do include:

  • Rest to reduce stress.
  • Avoid the sun. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you are outside.
  • Exercise regularly to prevent fatigue and joint stiffness.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Learn the warning signs of a symptoms flare, such as fatigue, pain, and rash, and take steps to control them.

With good self-care, most people with lupus can keep doing their regular daily activities.

It is important to learn about lupus so that you can understand how it might affect your life and how you can best cope with it. Also, help your family and friends understand your limitations and needs when your symptoms flare. Develop a support system of family, friends, and health professionals. Journal Quote-Where you are….

February 26, 2008 by Rebbekah
Filed under Journal Quotes, Personal Inspirations

This week’s journal quote is:

“Where you are is a cause for celebration-not an apology”

I found this quote today in my “The Courage of Leadership” cards from Nancy Solomon.

For me this quote means a lot. See there are many times I sit here and go I am not where I want to be, I am not where I had planned out 5 years ago or in high school etc etc and I start giving out excuses of why I am not where I thought I should be, making an apology to myself and sometimes to my family for not being where I had planned.

When I read this quote it hit me so what if I am not where I thought I would be, I have come farther then I ever had written done.  No I may not have my dream house like I had planned, I may not be rich or have my dream car right now…BUT I have come a long way…when I came online 5 years ago I didn’t know how to send an email attachement I now run a popular internet radio show, coach others in virtual assistance, build websites and do logos and other graphic work for clients, run a health podcasting directory and will soon be opening up a healthy living online magazine!

I never would have imagined being where I am today 18 years ago in high school!  I have actually come farther then my own plans ever were…

I do not need to apologize for old dreams or for old goals list, goals and dreams change as you get older….love were you are today and be proud of what you can do!

Do a dance! Celebrate who you are and celebrate your accomplishments so far in your life, NO MORE excuses NO MORE apologies for who you are or where you are in life :)

-Rebecca White

P.S. Please feel free to post your thoughts on this quote in the comments section below, I will be posting one maybe two quotes a week and writing about what they mean to me.  If you don’t want to share what it means to you by all means write it down and journal about it in your own personal, private journal.

Christmas what does it mean to you?

November 30, 2007 by Rebbekah

It’s that time of year again, Christmas time.  My favorite time of the year next to the awakening that happens to nature in the spring.  I love the fresh new snow when it falls, I love the happiness everyone seems to feel at this time of year.  The joy of giving whether it be for family, friends or giving to those in need.

For many years we did not have a lot of money, we received food baskets from the school for the holiday or we went downtown to receive food baskets so even the thought of the holiday and giving to our own children was stressful.  But the one thing I was taught as a kid was that it doesn’t matter what you have, it is the thought that counts.

For years I made homemade gifts, from home made soaps to jewerly to home made baked goods because we couldn’t afford to do more then that.  So many people loved the homemade gifts so much better then the pricey gifts they received from others because it was given from the heart.

This year we are able to purchase gifts that my kids want, something in 16 years of marriage we were never able to do.  I cannot wait for them to open their presents this year! But this got me to thinking again about what is the true meaning of Christmas.

While I am not going to get religion on you, for me Christmas is a celebration of life and of the Christ child being born and a time of joy and showing others how much we do love them.  But can we do this without breaking the bank.  Yes, we can!

We can give out of our hearts, and by that I mean give without wondering what we will get back in return or how it will benefit us.  I try to give all year through to local charitites because they were always there for us when we needed the help more so during the holidays but still they were there for us.

So what does the holidays mean to you?

Are you worried about what others will get you?

Is your list longer then your grocery lists?

Are you teaching your children the meaning of giving? Not just receiving?

This is especially a sensitive topic for me to write about because I don’t want to come across as a holier then thou person, I am far from that.  But I see examples everyday of children who are so used to getting everything they want that presents whether it be for Christmas or their birthdays mean nothing to them.  I had an experience that almost soured my whole look on giving.  I purchased a gift for a young girl, her mother told me it was what she wanted.  At the time we honesntly didn’t have a lot but I wanted to see her face filled with joy when she opened the present she had been asking for for so many weeks.  So my husband and I went out and purchased with our last few dollars for that week the toy she so wanted and we added a few other things to make it more special.

I was filled with excitement and anticipation waiting to see her face light up, only to have her open it and throw it at the wall because it was not the right color!  She stomped around and was angry at me and my husband.  I was shocked!  My kids never have done that to us, even when they were a little disappointed because they didn’t get what they wanted so this was a shock to my system that a child would act like this.

I looked to the mother to see her reaction, as mine would have been pure horrification, her mother just looked at me and said “well, I thought that is what she wanted”. She didn’t tell her daughter to stop and be thankful for what she wanted, she then proceeded to tell her that I could give her the receipt and go back to the store to get her exactly what she wanted, this still did not calm her down.

I just could not beleive that a 5 year old could act in such a way over something material.

Why did I tell you this whole story?

Well for me Christmas is special, we celebrate the life of Christ and we celebrate our loved ones who have passed, we celebrate life and we celebrate family.  Yes, I am very excited that finally after 16 years we can afford to go to the store to purchase a system that my kids have been wanting ever so much…but my family will still be taught that others are less fortunate, that the true meaning of Christmas is about family, and friends.  To celebrate life and others and to share joy among everyone.

To me Christmas is about our time as a family, having our Christmas tree decorating party, the few “spats” as we try to decide the best place for decorations to go to, the fun of sitting down after the decorations are up.  Watching holiday movies together and spending time together.  Going to our local zoo that does a “Lights before Christmas” theme around the whole zoo with tons of lights.

So what does Christmas mean to you?

Feeling sexy everyday

October 31, 2007 by Rebbekah

I have been married for 16 years to my high school sweetheart.  Over the years we have been through many things in our lives, things that I have seen split apart other marriages.  I am not bragging my point in all this is that even though we have been through thick and thin over the past years, I sometimes feel like we are missing that spark we used to have.

Do any of you ever feel that way?  Its not like hubby is not the most gentle or kind man I could ever want, but you know that spark you had in the beginning of your relationship the one you wanted to look your best, or you couldn’t wait for him to come home from work etc.  Its not like I don’t want to have him home, no but its become routine.

So how do we get that spark back in our lives?  I have been reading Mama Gena’s Marriage Manual to help spark my imagination.  One thing that mama says that I have always agreed with is that we need to respect ourselves and to love ourselves for who we are already.  I have always stated that.  By doing so not only do we make ourselves feel good and others will see our changes but that sexy spark will come back in your marriage as well.

I know I for one have days that hubby comes home, I am still working on the computer with a baseball hat on and sweats and no makeup.  Now I am not a huge makeup fan but honestly if a stranger stopped in at the house and I looked like this I would be embarrassed so why don’t I feel that way when hubby comes home.  Shouldn’t I start to love myself more, shouldn’t I take the time to do my makeup and at least get dressed before I start working.  The answer is yes!  Normally I can say yes I do that…but you know the days that you just don’t want to dress or put on a little makeup.  How do you feel about yourself when you do?

Do you feel sexy?  Do you walk around the house with a bounce in your step, or a wicked smile on your face…no why?  Because its hard to feel good about yourself when you are walking around with baggy clothes on.

Now I am not a skinny woman in fact I am a 5′5″ height and 170 pound framed woman.  I have a huge butt lol and hips that will never be the same after having 3 boys.  My gut will never be the same after having a surgery that cut through all my stomach muscles from top to bottom and left to right so I will never have a flat stomach unless I go and get it fixed through surgery…ugg not for me I can imagine myself that way but after watching a couple shows on plastic surgery NO WAY they can keep it. :)
So what do you do?  First I ask you this, what makes you feel good?  If you are like me and don’t really wear a lot of makeup then don’t, I usually wear a little foundation now that I have red blotches on my face and some lipstick…I love the new mineral makeup where it takes less then 30 seconds to put on makeup.  Anyway I digress, what else makes you feel good?  Do you act differently when you feel sexy? I know I do, even if all I am is dressed in jeans and a nice shirt I feel better about myself.  Again I won’t tell you I do this everday, my best friend could attest to that…how many times have I looked at the clock and realized everyone is going to be home and I am still in a baseball hat and in my sweats.  Then there are the days I decide to get ready, I walk differently all day.  I sashay around the house, I feel sexy.

In Mama Gena’s book she talks about her Sister Goddesses who are there for each other, support each other, go out of there way to brag about themselves and feel good about themselves and give each other advice on marriage, friendships etc etc a real good for woman to woman brag fest.  This has inspired me to start up a group for those of us who need girl time, who need time away…who need time to be a woman…away from responsibilites, a way to brag and feel sexy again, a time to help each other.

So be on the lookout, once I have the blog going I will be posting the URL here.  I hope to have a once a month online girl fest each month and hopefully go offline in my own hometown…a way to find other woman who need and want to feel sexy again in their marriage who want to have that spark back and a way for us girls to get together and do fun things and just plain take time for ourselves.

Heck our hubbies do it all the time when they go to a game or out in the garage with their buddies watching Sunday afternoon football so why shouldn’t we women do the same thing, go flirt have fun and just show off our sexy selves….

I hope you all join me once the blog and meetings start it will be fun to be able to brag and talk about things most times we feel we shouldn’t talk about especially online because of us being business owners…we may be business owners but first and foremost we are all women!

More to come….

Meditation Insight Using Angel Cards

October 6, 2007 by Rebbekah

For a long time I have been struggling with meditation, how to make it my own and how to get the answers I am searching for through meditation.

I found recently that using Angel Cards by Doreen Virtue has been a great way for me to concentrate on my meditations and the questions that I have been in my mind for days.  It gives me a clearer focus on the day ahead.  What I have been doing is think of the specific item in my life that I need an answer to or I say “What do I need to learn today?” I then shuffle the cards as I am thinking of my questions, then pull out 3 cards and open the guide book that comes with them, I then open my notebook that I keep with  my cards and write down the meanings.  After 24 hours I go back to what I wrote and see if what the cards said happened or rather if I learned from what the cards said.

For instance I pulled out a Release and Forgiveness card the other day, and it said to release old fears and forgive someone in your life that has upset you.  It may not seem relevant to others but facing what I have been the past couple months these reminded me that I had been holding on to anger against someone close to me, even though I honestly thought I had let it go…I hadn’t.

SO I use the angel cards to help me focus on what is needed in my life.

Opening up to healing…my own experience…

September 27, 2007 by Rebbekah
Filed under Law of Attraction, Personal Inspirations

Tonight I had the wonderful priveledge to be involved in an online seminar with Kim Mutch Emerson and Jenn Givler.  Many of you may know them from being guest speakers on Heal Yourself Talk Radio talking about the Laws of Attraction.

I started studying the Laws of Attraction a little over a year ago, I tried out several different teachers and didn’t quite find the one that resounded with me until I met Kim and Jenn.  Before I go into the “WOW” moment I had tonight, I just have to say that when you are looking to study anything you must always be on the search for a coach or teacher that you click with or you may do what I did and move away from the teachings you are looking for because you don’t feel comfortable or it just isn’t for you…it may not necessarily mean the teaching or course is not for you but that you and the teacher or not in sync with each other.

Tonight on the call in seminar during the teachings Kim gave a meditation that was so powerful I was transported to a place that I love, a place I know I will never be able to go to again….this is a place that I have only gone to a couple times, a friends property that is up for sale….so I can now only go there in my dreams and meditations but this place has such a profound sense of happiness, calmness and spirituality that I need in my life that I can now focus on the spot and go there. For some who have not done meditation it may sound weird but that is what happens for me.

Kim’s meditation was about healing, letting go of anger, letting go of past hurt, letting go of our past life…Kim told us to bind up our fears, to let go of them to watch them in our head as they soar to the heavens and we release these fears and anger to God. Before I go into what I experienced I want to share a little of the anger that I have been dealing with….

The past few weeks have been very trying for my family.  I do not often share what goes on personally in my life, but for this post I feel it is needed to be said.

My FIL lives with us, he can be very emotionally and verbally abusive.  Most of the time we can let it go…but something he said to my husband last night was the last straw, all the anger all the hurt and all the fear come rushing to the front of my soul.  I watched as this one sentence tore my husband down to a child once again…I watched as my kids stood there, mouths open…fear in their eyes as this one sentence was said….

I will not repeat this sentence as it would only give it credence in my life again, that is gone and taken care of it has been released to God…

During the past week, the doctor’s have told me that my husband on top of being a Type 1 diabetic may also have Whipple Disease.  After doing much research I know it is curable if caught in time…I know in my heart he will be ok…but that tiny bit of fear of losing my best friend in the world, my lover, my one and only after 18 years of being together and facing more struggles then anyone needs to face…this fear was debiliating me.

All of these things from the past few days had me starting to feel torn down; until tonight.

During the meditation, the releasing of my past, the releasing of the hurt I started crying…I had my eyes closed, sitting in the middle of my son’s room in the dark listening to Kim’s meditation.  I was transported to my favorite spot, I could smell the trees, hear the river talk and feel the breeze on my face.  As Kim led us deeper I saw myself wrapping up all the pain and anguish from the past few days, throwing it up in the air and watching the wind grab the pieces of paper that in my mind represented all the anger and fear and hurt…watched them float up to God, I started crying, tears running down my face yet they were not tears of hurt or pain they were tears of joy…tears of relief….tears of happiness.  Yes, I pray and I ask God for help but sometimes your mind can get going and you cannot focus…through meditation I am able to do all of this and be in touch with God on a level that makes me calm down and my mind be quiet.

Had it not been for Kim and Jenn today before the seminar and during the seminar, I may not have been able to deal with the pain or help my husband deal with this pain and open slap on the face…defeating words…

My family’s healing has started.  Thanks to the geniune care and loving attitudes of two wonderful woman who I have had the greatest pleasure of meeting online.

Healing is a day to day process.  Healing hurts.  Healing is good.  Sometimes you just need someone to be there to listen, to give you encouragement, to tell you they love you…this is what these two ladies have given to me.  Thank you very much!

I felt very inspired after the show and was led to create this piece of graphic work:

If you listened to today’s live show you will know that Collette and I gave everyone a challenge to up their physical activity during this next week and if you blog to go ahead and post it to your blog and let me know.

My challenge to myself is to start doing a yoga tape two times a week and get up early in the morning to do these extra exercises.  I also challenge myself to taking extra steps by parking farther away when I go to the store, do some pushups against my countertops while making dinner and adding 500 extra steps to my walking routine.

So are you up for a challenge?  If you post on your blog your challenge to yourself please comment below with your own challenge to yourself and the link to your blog for us all to be able to encourage each other to meet our own challenges.
