In Praise of Mothers Everywhere

Who deserves more love and gratitude than anyone else in your life? Your mother, that’s who.

Without her the world wouldn’t be able to experience the unique soul that you are. Without her your life wouldn’t exist. Without her you wouldn’t be able to be, do or have anything.

Let’s be honest. Dad definitely did his part (and I’m sure did it very well), but mom carried you in her womb for 9 months or so. Carrying anything around for 9 months isn’t easy - especially a baby that’s getting bigger and heavier every day while playing around with your hormones and emotions.

Since she carried you around in her womb have you received a gift that is even remotely in the same league as that? Nope. Not a chance my friend.

You may love your mom. You may think she’s the most precious being on Earth. If so, then I may be preachin’ to the choir here. So lets address the beings who are carrying resentment, hatred and other heavy negative emotions around when they think of their mothers.

You may think your mom is evil. You may blame her for things she did or didn’t do for you. But you know what? She did the best she knew how with the knowledge and experience she had at the time. And you wouldn’t have the opportunity to judge her now if she hadn’t have given you the gift of life.

Whether you like to admit it or not, you chose your parents. We all choose them before we’re born. Our souls contract to come down here in a karmic relationship with them.

No matter how they treat us, it’s part of a bigger karmic picture than what we usually see. There are no accidents in the Universe. All is in divine order - even when our personalities can’t see it.

Even if your mom was a drug addict that beat you, who knows what past life karma helped you to make the choice to have her as a mother. Somehow by having her as your mother (good or bad looking on the outside) she is helping you to clear up some past karma.

Having her as your mom at this time in history is giving you unique experiences no one else will have. This is helping your spirit to evolve and grow.

You have a right to choose whether or not a being with your mom’s personality and behavior is a being you choose to be close to once you become an adult. This choice of discernment is valuable in every relationship - especially with family members who attach to you through guilt and manipulation.

You don’t have to be her friend, but you don’t have a right to judge or blame her (or anyone else for that matter.) You haven’t walked in her shoes and you don’t know the path of her spirit.

Even if staying away from your mom is a healthy choice for you to make to take care of yourself, I invite you to love her, forgive her and be grateful to her. She is the vessel from which you sprang forth into the world.

You can dislike her behavior, but I invite you to love her being. Love the higher self within her even if it’s buried under a heavy load of negative personality traits.

You know, the way she loved you even when you were a fiery teenager on overloaded hormones who talked back to her in every breath. The way she loved you when you were a toddler who only knew how to say “Me” and “No” and leave a mess around the house.

There is no gift you can ever give her to repay her for giving you life. So at the very least appreciate this fact. Forgive her if you need to (it hurts you more than her to carry that burden upon yourself.)

Give her more love and appreciation than your heart has ever known. You’ll be amazed at the overwhelming joy you’ll experience form doing this. It’ll be a fantastic gift to you both.
