I have long been inspired by the Patch Adams story. Today while having some down time due to it being Easter Sunday I decided I wanted to look around You Tube, and a thought hit me “I wonder if You Tube has any videos of Patch Adams…” After viewing several clips on You Tube I ran across one that I felt lead to post. After reading how Patch Adams has inspired me you can scroll down to view the one video that lead me to write about Patch and share the video I found.
I was first introduced to Patch (Hunter) Adams when the hit movie Patch Adams came out starring Robin Williams. What struck me the most was how one man so far down in the deep depths of his soul felt like no longer being on this earth….something that happened to me a couple years back…yet after committing himself to a psych ward learned that he wanted to help people. He wanted to bring love, laughter and joy into people’s lives. From this experience Patch left the psych ward and went to school to become a medical doctor, but he noticed that doctors didn’t think of patients as people but as just another file they had to cure.
So what did Patch do? He started to make a difference with his laughter with his own form of comedy. After going through school and seeing the need for those who could not afford health care he wanted to start a free clinic…so much of this you can see in the movie or read in Patch’s book Gesundheit.
The thing that has stood with me over the years is how ONE MAN, one person can change how people feel! Whenever anyone is around Patch you cannot help but laugh, not because he is funny looking, although he would stand out
as he walks around in a clown outfit most of the time….but the true sense of love he has for everyone, his vision is to have a free hospital and community where everyone works together for the good and health of everyone.
So many times I sit here thinking how can I help others? Or I hear it from others what can one person possibly do to make a difference in the world? Then I think of Patch and how he inspired me so many years ago…in fact I can honestly say that because of Patch I frequently go up to people in stores and just smile real big in their faces till they smile…while I am not as funny or out there as Patch, getting people to smile or laugh because I smiled back at them brightens not only my day but theirs as well.
There was one day that I did this with my kids, and they got into the spirit of the moment with me. I saw a very sad woman, she looked like her world was collasping around her…so my son and I walked over to her and just smiled REAL big, I was closer to my son so I was bending down and we smiled…she looked at us like we were crazy… then the most amazing thing happened she started to laugh, and we started to laugh…before walking away after talking to her she stopped me and said “You know…I was standing here thinking how I have no joy in my life, how I have not laughed in awhile and how this world is so sad and black. ” she paused then said “You and your son showed me that there is still sunshine in the world, I want to thank you….”
So for that person who says how can I do anything to help in this world I am only ONE person…take a look at Patch Adams and his life, his vision and the video below and see how you can learn from ONE MAN…
Imagine, one person leads to two people which leads to 100 people which leads to a 1,000 people which leads to a million people….what changes can we make in our world? It starts with just one person.
